About the Life in the UK Test

The Life in the UK Test is a computer-based exam required for most applicants for British citizenship (naturalisation) and Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) / Settled Status. It's booked and sat at an official test centre, consists of 24 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official handbook "Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents" (3rd edition), and must be completed in 45 minutes. You need to answer at least 18 out of 24 questions correctly (75%) to pass.

How our mock tests work

Tests 1-20 draw from a bank of 158 unique questions covering every topic in the official handbook, using a deterministic shuffle so every test gets even topic coverage with minimal overlap. Beyond those, there are 6 tests built around individual handbook chapters and 20 bonus tests on specific topics — each with its own dedicated set of questions, for 1,104 questions across 46 tests in total. Every test is timed to match the real exam (24 questions, 45 minutes), and after every question you get an explanation of the correct answer so you understand the reasoning, not just memorise it.

Mistakes Mode

Every question you get wrong is automatically saved to Mistakes Mode, a separate practice tool that lets you drill exactly the questions that tripped you up until you've got them down — the most efficient way to close gaps before test day.

Frequently asked questions

What does Practice Test 18 cover?

Test 18 draws its 24 questions from Britizenship's shared bank of 158 handbook-based questions used across all 20 numbered tests, so you'll see a broad, evenly-distributed mix of topics rather than one specific theme.

How many mock tests are free?

The first 3 of the 20 general mock tests are free for everyone. Premium unlocks all 46 tests — the full 20-test set plus 6 chapter-based tests and 20 bonus tests — for a one-time payment of £9.99, with no subscription.

Do the mock tests use the same questions as the real test?

The real test draws from the official handbook's question pool, which isn't published verbatim by the government. Our tests cover 1,104 questions in total, written to cover the same topics, format and difficulty so you're well prepared, but no site can guarantee the exact wording of the real exam.

How is the pass mark calculated?

You need at least 18 correct answers out of 24 questions, which is 75%, in 45 minutes — the same format and pass mark as the official Life in the UK Test.

Can I retake a mock test I've already completed?

Yes, you can retake any unlocked test as many times as you like. Your best strategy is usually to retake a test after reviewing your mistakes to confirm the material has stuck.

Is my progress saved if I close the browser?

Yes, your scores and progress are saved locally in your browser's storage, so they'll still be there next time you visit on the same device and browser — just don't clear your browser data.

What is the Pass Guarantee?

If you complete all 46 Premium mock tests and still fail the official Life in the UK Test within 90 days of activating Premium, we refund your £9.99. Use the Completion Certificate above (once you're Premium) as proof you finished every test, and see the full terms.
