The government's "earned settlement" consultation, which proposed extending the standard qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) from 5 to 10 years, closed in February 2026 with over 200,000 responses. As of September 2026, no response or new Immigration Rules have been published — the official consultation page still says the government is analysing feedback. The current 5-year settlement route and the Life in the UK Test remain unchanged and in force in the meantime; passing the test is expected to stay a requirement under any future model. Read more.

The test format remains the same in 2026: 24 multiple-choice questions with a pass mark of 18 correct answers. Read more.
The UK Government announced that the Life in the UK Test will be reviewed as part of wider immigration reforms. No changes have been introduced yet. Read more.
Plans were announced to extend the standard qualifying period for settlement from five years to ten years for many migrants. The proposal has not yet taken effect. Read more.
