At the test centre
  • The test is taken on a computer at a registered centre
  • Available in English, Welsh, or Scottish Gaelic
  • Headphones available if needed
  • Results given immediately after finishing
  • If you pass, you receive a pass certificate — keep it safe for your citizenship application
Tips to pass
  • Read each question carefully — some options look very similar
  • Flag uncertain questions and come back to them
  • Don't linger — move on if stuck, return if time allows
  • Trust your preparation — if you've done the mock tests, you're ready
  • Stay calm — 45 minutes is plenty for 24 questions
Note: If you're not familiar with computers, request a short practice session before the test starts — just ask the invigilator.
If you don't pass

You can retake as soon as you feel ready — no waiting period. The £50 fee applies again each time. No limit on attempts.

After you pass
  • You'll receive a pass certificate with a unique reference number
  • Keep it — you'll need it for your citizenship or settlement application
  • The certificate does not expire

Frequently asked questions

Can I use notes or a calculator during the test?

No. The test is closed-book — you cannot bring notes, phones, calculators, or any other aids into the test room.

What if I finish before the 45 minutes are up?

You can usually leave once you've completed and reviewed your answers, but check with your invigilator on the day for the exact procedure.

Do I get to see which questions I got wrong?

You'll be told immediately whether you passed or failed, but you won't usually get a detailed breakdown of each question. If you want that kind of feedback, practise with our Mock Tests and Mistakes Mode, which show you exactly which questions you got wrong.

What if I have a disability or additional need?

Test centres offer reasonable adjustments, such as extra time or an accessible format. You need to request this when booking your test.

Is the test the same every time?

The questions are drawn from the official handbook and vary between sittings, but the format — 24 questions, 45 minutes, 75% required to pass — stays the same every time.

Can I bring water or snacks into the test room?

Generally no food or drink is allowed inside the test room itself. Check the specific rules with your test centre before you arrive.
