Before you take the test
Everything you need to know to book and prepare for your Life in the UK Test.
You can only book online through the official website:
- Visit www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk
- Create an account or log in
- Select your preferred test centre and date
- Pay the £50 test fee by debit or credit card
You must bring all of the following — without them, you won't be admitted:
- Valid photo ID — Passport (any nationality) or UK driving licence
- Proof of address — Bank statement, utility bill, or tenancy agreement (dated within the last 3 months)
- Booking confirmation email — Print it or show it on your phone
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled test time. Late arrivals may not be admitted and you will lose your fee.
There are over 60 registered test centres across the UK, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Belfast. Choose your nearest when booking.

Frequently asked questions
Is the £50 test fee refundable if I miss my appointment?
No. The fee is non-refundable if you miss your slot or cancel too close to the date, so only book once you're confident you'll be ready to attend.
Can I change my test date after booking?
You can usually reschedule through your online account, though changes made close to the test date may require paying the £50 fee again. Check your booking confirmation email for the exact deadline.
What if I don't have a passport or UK driving licence?
These are the only two forms of photo ID accepted at the test centre. Without one of them, you won't be able to book or sit the test.
Do I still need proof of address if my ID shows my current address?
Yes. Proof of address is a separate requirement — a bank statement, utility bill, or tenancy agreement dated within the last 3 months — even if your ID already shows where you live.
How far in advance should I book?
Test centres in larger cities can fill up quickly, so booking a few weeks ahead gives you more flexibility to choose a convenient date and location.
Can someone come with me to the test centre?
Generally only the person taking the test is admitted into the test room; anyone accompanying you will need to wait outside. If you need special accommodations, contact your test centre in advance.
